The property was originally owned by the Hext brothers, who came over from England in the mid 1800’s and settled on the property. They built a 2-story home there. The original structure was box-like with a simple Greek-Revival farmhouse design, but over the years alterations were made to it like a den and a side porch.
Ernest John Pfanner Sr. bought the property in the 1930s. He had emigrated from Zurich, Switzerland through Ellis Island and then moved west. After buying the ranch, he developed a dairy operation with the help of his son Ernest John Pfanner, Jr. At one point they had 200 Holstein cows.
Ernest John Pfanner Jr. served in WWII, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, before returning home. He briefly attended UC Davis, but left to return to work on the dairy farm. He later opened up ‘The Milk Queen’ in Davis, CA. Pfanner Jr. served as a West Plainfield fire commissioner and later earned a spot on the Davis Board of Education, and then the Yolo County Board of Supervisors.
Pfanner Jr. passed away in 2001. His wife Carolin Pfanner passed away in 2023. In the last few years the family began renovations. The surrounding gardens were also brought back to life, making it a perfect place for celebrations.
